A Bit of History
To everyone who desires to learn about the history of Ukraine of 16-17 centuries, we offer driving tour to Pirogovo museum. This is one of the most exciting tours, as in this open-air museum there have been collected ancient customs, everyday life and architectural traditions from all Ukrainian regions of 16-17 centuries. Pirogov is a settlement on the southern outskirts of Kiev. During the archaeological excavations on the Pirogov territory there have been found objects of the Bronze Age, as well as Zarubinets culture. During the period of Kievan Rus’ the reinforcement was built here. The complex of local caves and Anthony well are of scientific value.
Pirogovo Museum was founded in 1969, and opened to the public in 1976. Pirogovo area is about 150 hectares. The museum has about 300 buildings which are the memos of Ukrainian folk architecture of 16-20 centuries. The monuments of material and spiritual culture from 25 Ukrainian regions are grouped according to historical and ethnographic, and geographical zoning. Stock museum’s collection includes more than 70 thousand exhibits – samples of Ukrainian folk garments, fabrics, household items, ceramic and wooden items. Visiting Pirogovo you will find yourself in several centuries ago, in a time when the horses were the means of transportation instead of the cars and when women were engaged in weaving and clay modeling. It is this atmosphere which is being created by the museum staff dressed in Ukrainian costumes and they are performing a daily routine in the same style that had been being performed by our ancestors. Ukrainian songs complement the atmosphere, and if you suddenly hear a clatter and chatter – it’s time to go to the fair. There you can buy souvenirs, woolen garments, embroidered shawls just made by skillful needlewomen of the 16th century. If you have wandered too far into the village, you can ask the glorious Cossack – rider to take you up. Here you can also celebrate any national holiday according to all ancient traditions.
