A Bit of History

Consider a tour around the temples of Kiev. Kiev is a city where you can see many churches of different denominations, each of them has its own unique history of creation.

During the driving tour you will visit St. Vladimirs’ Cathedral. St. Vladimir’s Cathedral was built to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in ancient Russia . it took 34 years to build it. The works began in 1862, but 4 years later there had been made miscalculations that had led to serious damage, including cracks in the walls. So the works had been stopped for 10 years and the construction has been finished only in 1896. From the beginning the architect of the Cathedral was J. Strom, and later he worked with P. Shparro. The idea was later remade by A. Beretty.

Ordering a driving tour around the temples of Kiev, you will learn many interesting facts about these mysterious places. The architectural style of St. Vladimirs’ Cathedral consists of seven domes which are a mixture of Romanesque, pseudo-Byzantinesque and pseudo-Russian forms. The facing was made with bronze, enamel, marble and gilt. Despite the religious theme of frescoes, their characters look quite realistic. The most popular is the portrait of the Virgin and Child on a gold background by Vasnetsov. North and South walls of the cathedral are decorated with images of the Last Supper, Christ before Pilate, and the Crucifixion of Jesus by Kotarbinsky and Svedomsky. Among the paintings, there are also famous works by Mikhail Nesterov: Portrait of a young prince Gleb, prince Boris and Princess Olga.

Then driving tour around the temples of Kiev continues by visiting Alexander Church, which is on Kostelnaya street. It was built in 1817 – 38 on the place where a wooden church was burned. Church is made in classical style. Alexander Church is square in plan, with a dome and two towers and anticum. It was opened in 1842.

Karaite Kenesa is the next point of the driving tour. This is religious building of Karaites. It was built upon the project of architect Gorodetsky in stylized Moorish forms in 1900. Imitation of stone carving and arabesques-like sculpture is the main decoration of the facade and interior walls. Kenesa had housed many institutions, but in 1968 the building was modernized.

Driving tour around the temples of Kiev is an opportunity to learn the history of many religious monuments and shrines. Driving tour around the temples of Kiev continues with visit to Ar- Rahma mosque. Since 1897 the Muslims had been trying to create their own temple in Ukraine. But they only managed to open a house of worship in Kiev on Myrnoy, 5 street. As this house could not accommodate a large number of followers, there appeared a need to build a mosque, which could house 800 worshipers at a time. Unfortunately the First World War prevented building the mosque on Golosiyivska 29 street. After in February 1996 the Kiev State Administration adopted a decree on the allocation to the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Ukraine land for the construction and maintenance of the memorial and prayer houses, started the construction of the mosque at the expense of money donated by Muslims of the city. Already from 1998 on Fridays and holidays prayers had been conducted in Ar- Rahme. Officially, the church was opened in 2000 after crescent was set on the dome of the mosque. Ar- Rahma is translated as charity.
